During medieval & Tudor times livestock was one of the families most precious possessions To protect their livestock from theft they would be kept indoors sharing the family home. Poultry was particularly valuable because of its dual function of providing eggs & meat at little cost, living on the family scraps & foraging. The Tudors would keep the poultry in a livestock cage in the home collecting eggs & using the top for slaughtering
